Building More Than Wealth
An interview with Joe Sayklay, President,
Weststar Wealth Management
For more than 25 years, WestStar Wealth Management has helped individuals, families, businesses and charitable organizations navigate life’s most important financial decisions. While investment management remains an important part of that work, today’s wealth management is about much more than building portfolios—it’s about protecting legacies, preserving assets and helping clients prepare for the future with confidence.
As one of the region’s most experienced fiduciary providers, WestStar Wealth Management now oversees more than $1.3 billion in assets under administration and management. Guided by a relationship-first philosophy and supported by WestStar Bank’s commitment to local leadership and local decision-making, the division continues to provide personalized fiduciary services designed around each client’s unique goals.
We recently sat down with Joe Sayklay, Senior Vice President of Wealth Management, to discuss the division’s 25-year journey, what it truly means to serve as a fiduciary, and why trusted relationships remain at the center of everything WestStar Wealth Management does.
The foundation has always been relationships. While our division has grown tremendously over the past 25 years, our mission hasn’t changed. Every client has unique goals, family circumstances and financial priorities, and our responsibility is to understand those needs before recommending solutions.
We’ve been fortunate to earn the trust of individuals, families, businesses and charitable organizations throughout the Borderplex. Today, we oversee more than $1.3 billion in assets under administration and management, but those assets represent much more than numbers. They represent decades of trust and the responsibility clients place in us to help protect what they’ve worked hard to build.
The continued support of WestStar Bank’s Board of Directors has also been instrumental. Their long-term vision has allowed us to invest in experienced professionals, modern technology and fiduciary capabilities that position us to serve clients today and for generations to come.
Being a fiduciary means we’re legally and ethically obligated to act in our clients’ best interests. Every recommendation, every investment decision and every fiduciary responsibility begins with that commitment.
Unlike relationships that may focus primarily on products or transactions, a fiduciary relationship is built on loyalty, prudence, care and accountability. Our fiduciary powers granted by the State of Texas allow us to serve in numerous trust and estate capacities while maintaining rigorous professional standards. We also operate under regulatory oversight that reinforces sound governance and operational excellence.
For our clients, it provides confidence that the advice they receive is designed around their interests and long-term goals.
Many people think wealth management begins and ends with investing, but effective planning requires a much broader perspective.
Our investment management and trust administration teams work together to create coordinated strategies for wealth accumulation, preservation and transfer. We serve as trustee for revocable trusts, irrevocable trusts, trusts under wills, special needs trusts and other fiduciary arrangements. We also serve as Executor when families need an experienced, impartial professional to administer an estate.
Every family has different needs, and many of the assets we oversee extend well beyond traditional investments. We have experience administering real estate, ranches, mineral interests, oil and gas royalties and closely held business interests, helping preserve those assets while carrying out our clients’ wishes.
Financial planning isn’t reserved for one stage of life. Many successful investors began with modest portfolios and a desire to make informed financial decisions.
That’s why we introduced Wealth Builder, offering both self-directed and advisor-guided investing with no minimum investment requirement. At the same time, we continue to provide comprehensive planning for individuals, families and business owners with increasingly complex financial needs.
Our approach never changes. We begin by listening and developing solutions that align with each client’s goals.
Our combination of fiduciary expertise and local leadership.
WestStar Bank has always believed in local decision-making, and that philosophy continues within Wealth Management. Our professionals average more than 25 years of industry experience, bringing deep expertise while understanding the communities and businesses we serve.
Technology has enhanced reporting, security and operational efficiency, but it will never replace personal relationships. Behind every account is a family, a business or a legacy that deserves thoughtful stewardship.
Because wealth management is ultimately about trust.
For more than 25 years, we’ve had the privilege of helping clients prepare for retirement, establish trusts, preserve family wealth, administer estates and plan for future generations. Those responsibilities require experience, objectivity and a commitment to always placing our clients’ interests first.
We’re proud to combine the resources of a sophisticated fiduciary organization with the personal service of a locally led community bank. That’s what has defined WestStar Wealth Management for more than two decades, and it’s what will continue to guide us in the years ahead.

WestStar Wealth Management recently celebrated 25 years. Looking back, what has contributed most to its success?
The foundation has always been relationships. While our division has grown tremendously over the past 25 years, our mission hasn’t changed. Every client has unique goals, family circumstances and financial priorities, and our responsibility is to understand those needs before recommending solutions.
We’ve been fortunate to earn the trust of individuals, families, businesses and charitable organizations throughout the Borderplex. People often hear the word “fiduciary,” but may not understand what it means. Why is that distinction so important?
Being a fiduciary means we’re legally and ethically obligated to act in our clients’ best interests. Every recommendation, every investment decision and every fiduciary responsibility begins with that commitment.
Unlike relationships that may focus primarily on products or transactions, a fiduciary relationship is built on loyalty, prudence, care and accountability.
